Plus nine Athens

The industrial building on 18-20 Iera Odos currently used as a music venue, is situated within the geographical region of the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos (1100 BC – AD 500). Nine metres below the surface of the modern city and tons of backfills, excavations since 1863 have brought to light parts of inner Kerameikos (potters’ and residential quarters) and outer Kerameikos (cemetery and the Demósion Sema public graveyard).

The area of the exhibition building lies nine metres above the funerary monuments of prominent Athenians. It is located right above the ancient Hiera Hodos (Sacred Way) linking Athens with Eleusis where the Eleusinian Mysteries took place; on the west bank of the Eridanos river; west of the Dromos, a wide road leading the way to the Platonic Academy and the –later– Christian orthodox church of the Holy Trinity. It is all being now overshadowed by today’s Peiraios roadway and the adjacent buildings of the last century.

The exhibition will negotiate notions with clear references to antiquity yet liberated from an obsessive fixation on the ancient world. It will take into consideration every single metre of evolution and will speculate on all of the possible nine metres of history that will follow.

What may lie nine metres below our feet without us being able to discover it, could equate to a future reality nine metres above. The surfacing of a utopian condition brings forth the imaginary, but at the same time it flirts as a connection link with the idea of passage and transition. A dialogue emerges between realities and it is activated through a crack in spacetime, a crevice that [inter]connects the worlds in one breath.

The transformation of the urban habitat through literal and metaphorical backfills embodies ideas of [dis]semblance, voidance, disdain, corrosion of memory and the empowerment of an [inter]personal mythology and fiction as well as the fabrication of an in-progress identity. The repertoire of an everchanging political, religious and cultural condition is inscribed not only within the historical continuity of this locus but also within a flux of a conscious construction, deconstruction and conflict.

The choreography of the contemporary urban landscape redefines the architecture of life itself. It gives birth to a taxonomy of possibilities with human existence and its hypostasis as the protagonists, undergoing a constant battle with time and their very own selves.

Curator dr Kostas Prapoglou invites 16 contemporary artists from three generations to establish via their cross-disciplinary visual vocabulary (embracing installations, video, sculpture, painting and ceramics) a site and time specific relationship. They will discover in the ground and above the concrete floor themselves as well as the entire world and empower the viewers’ desire to dig with their eyes and build with their dreams.

participating artists: Lydia Andrioti, Manolis Baboussis, Despina Charitonidi, Evangelos Chatzis, Lydia Dambassina, Diohandi, Kleio Gizeli, Zoe Hatziyannaki, Yannis Kondaratos, James M. Lane, Despina Meimaroglou, Eusevia Michailidou, Evi Savvaidi, Nikos Tranos, Adonis Volanakis, Eleni Zouni.

Jorge Méndez Blake, El Castillo / The Castle, 2007. Interview.

Interview: Jorge Méndez Blake, El Castillo / The Castle, 2007

The emblematic work The Castle by the Mexican artist Jorge Méndez Blake is currently on view in Athens, in Athens Concert Hall, at the exhibition After Babel curated by Anna Kafetsi. The exhibition is organized by Annex M focusing on Books/Readers/Writers to take place during Athens 2018 World Book Capital. It will last until May 18th 2019.

Having as a starting point The Castle  Jorge Méndez Blake shared some thoughts on this specific work and contemporary art in general in a short interview for Ex_posure.

Your work ‘The Castle’, (2007) is part of the group exhibition ‘After Babel’ currently presented in Athens and curated by Anna Kafetsi. ‘After Babel’ focuses on books, texts and libraries.

‘The Castle’ is based on a book. What does this specific book mean to you?

I chose this book because of two things: First the title, which refers to an architectural construction and is the only thing visible of the book, and second, the story, which is a typical Kafka´story in which an individual is fighting against a large system which he doesn’t understand and fails to recognize. In Kafka´stories the system always wins, always oppresses, always is intangible. Nevertheless, in the sculpture the meaning is more opened and the small book does make a change in the apparently solid structure, which becomes fragile with the book below.

If you were to talk to a children’s audience about you work, The Castle, what would you say?

Children are normally less complicated. They get contemporary art very fast and easy. I think if this work has a quality is that it is very direct, it doesn’t need much talking. Even if you don’t know Kafka, there’s a lecture of the overall effect. I don’t know what I would say, I would prefer to hear what children have to say about it.

Do you believe that contemporary art and words/texts are inseparably related?

Not at all. Only some works of contemporary art are text-based. There’s a misconception that contemporary art is complicated and conceptual, when it is not. But this idea is sometimes provoked by the same artists and curators which complicate things, trying to fill artificially a work with outside meanings, trying to fill a void. There’s a lot of classic painting and sculpture in contemporary art for example and it doesn’t need much explanation. But, as in classic art, the more you know about the artist and the stories that surrounds the work, the more interesting it should get. I believe that pieces of art have several layers that the viewer faces, and if the viewer has more information normally he is able to unveil more layers.

If you were to write a book what would the title and the content be?

It would be a book of haikus.

Do you as an artist feel also a story teller?

Yes, many times. Even though not all the works have a story, the ones that have one normally are the ones that are more appeling to me. In my work I like to be able to talk about specific works, but I try not to “explain” the works, only talk about the process and intentions, never about meanings.

What more is art capable to accomplish than words and books?

A lot of things. Both things should be understood as different disciplines, even though they can be mixed or influenced each other. The energy of some moments in the history of literature cannot be duplicated in art, as the way art shows the world cannot be described with words.

Dalí / Duchamp, Royal Academy of Arts

Interview with the co-curator of the Dali/Duchap exhibition, Desiree de Chair

Dalí / Duchamp is the first exhibition to present the art of two of the twentieth century’s most famous artists in exclusive dialogue. Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) and Salvador Dalí (1904– 1989) are usually seen as opposites in almost every respect, yet they shared attitudes to art and life that are manifested in their respective oeuvres on many levels. Taking their friendship as its starting point, the exhibition will demonstrate the aesthetic, philosophical and personal links between them. Over 80 paintings, sculptures, ‘readymades’, photographs, drawings, films and archival material bring to life the myriad of connections between the works of these two very different creative and intelligent minds. Dalí / Duchamp includes loans from public institutions and private collections across Europe and the US.

The exhibition is curated by independent art historian Professor Dawn Ades CBE, Dr William Jeffett, Chief Curator, Exhibitions at The Dalí Museum, St Petersburg, Florida and Sarah Lea, Curator, Royal Academy of Arts.

Co-curator Desiree de Chair talked to Ex_posure about this unorthodox “artistic meeting”.

CHRISTOS SIMATOS, ‘Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring’

SOFIA PAPADOPOULOU, “WITHOUT…”

Sofia Papadopoulou recently graduated from The Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA).

The collection of her works for her thesis entitled «Without…» which she presented in June was exceptional, exemplary, and like a breath of life in the visual arts, in the pretentious part of Documenta 14 at ASFA that was dominated by exurberance.

She belongs to a group of new blood in the fine art scene in our country and is a person with energy and deep concerns who not only follows but participates actively in the art scene with persistence, consciousness, and a spirit of cooperation which sets her apart. She has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.

Sofia Papadopoulou spoke with Eleni Zymaraki Tzortzi.

Hervé Youmbi, Celestial Masks, Sculpture Projects Münster 2017

Celestial Masks by Hervé Youmbi at Sculpture Projects Münster 2017

Every ten years since 1977, the Skulptur Projekte has been offering a special exhibition experience: Artists develop site-specific works for Münster—sculptures, but also video installations or performances. These projects inscribe themselves in the city’s structural, historical and social contexts while at the same time pointing beyond its boundaries. The artistic explorations are as much concerned with issues of the global present and reflections on the concept of sculpture as with questions about the relationship between public and private space in times of increasing digitalization.

Skulptur Projekte Münster is considered one of the world’s most important exhibition dedicated to sculpture and public art. It was launched in 1977, and its artistic director since the very first edition has always been Kasper König. This year, the co-curators are Britta Peters and Marianne Wagner. From 10 June to 1 October 2017, the fifth edition of the Skulptur Projekte will show thirty-five new artistic productions.

Cameroonian artist Hervé Youmbi (1973-) presents the project Celestial Masks in the area of the Überwasser cemetery, a medieval Christian burial site. His Masks are either suspended among the trees or mounted on them.

In a clear and playful way Hervé Youmbi deals with the long and problematic history of Western modernity with masks from the African continent. He contradicts the idea of a singular identity, using objects and an iconographic, hybrid system of forms taken from Western pop cultures as well as from precolonial and colonial art production in West and Central Africa. At the same time his projects powerfully critique the global art market, the spaces and practices to which it gives rise, and the larger, late-capitalist system to which they collectively belong.

Hervé Youmbi talked to Eleni Zymaraki about his installation currently presented at Sculpture Projeckte Münster 2017 and how this connects with his earlier ongoing projects – Totems to Haunt Our Dreams, Visages de masques – related to African masks.
