Sharon Core – Still life photography

Sharon Core – Still life photography

Interview

At a first glance Sharon Core’s still life contemporary images impress us with their exact likeness to known still life paintings and their true faithfulness to the genre’s history and tradition; we are amazed however once we realize that her works are photographs of real life compositions entirely created by her! And we mean entirely! From the plants grown, the food cooked and the cakes baked… to the furniture found, constructed and arranged… all in order to reproduce the already existing paintings through her camera lens!

In her two major projects the Theibaud series and Early American that resulted in series of photographs, Core managed to painstakingly re-produce the real life subject matter of two American still life painters’ compositions, Wayne Thiebaud’s and Raphaelle Peale’s, and photograph them!

Geoform – The Contemporary Geometric Art’s dynamically expanding project!

Geoform

Geoform is an online scholarly resource and curatorial project whose focus is the use of geometric form and structure in contemporary abstract art being made by artists from around the world.

Geoform explores, documents and celebrates the rich diversity of style and aesthetic intent that characterizes this broad vein of contemporary non-objective abstraction. Such diversity attests to the profound resonance that geometric form and structure have had for people across time and place.

Geoform is edited by an artist, Julie Karabenick, and has been online since May, 2005.

Julie Karabenick talked to Eleni Zymaraki Tzorzi.

Bronze Age warrior’s tomb discovered in southwestern Greece

UC team discovers rare warrior tomb filled with bronze age wealth and weapons
An international team of archaeologists led by University of Cincinnati researchers recently discovered a Bronze Age warrior’s tomb in southwestern Greece filled with more than 1,400 objects: jewels, weapons and armor, as well as bronze, silver and gold vessels.

On the floor of the grave lay the skeleton of an adult male, stretched out on his back. Weapons lay to his left, and jewelry to his right.

Near the head and chest was a bronze sword, its ivory hilt covered in gold. A gold-hilted dagger lay beneath it. Still more weapons were found by the man’s legs and feet.

OPENING THE BOX: UNPACKING MINIMALISM / The George Economou Collection

OPENING THE BOX: UNPACKING MINIMALISM

Curated by Mark Godfrey

The George Economou Collection is pleased to announce Opening the Box: Unpacking Minimalism. This group exhibition curated by Mark Godfrey, opens on Thursday, October 22, 2015, at the Economou Collection Space in Athens, Greece.

When people think of Minimalism, they often think of a generic grey metal box that has been fabricated in a workshop in the United States and is displayed with other similar if not identical boxes. Although this box often features in accounts of Minimalism, it is a mythical, rather than a real artwork. This exhibition of ten works from the George Economou Collection attempts to tell a more nuanced story about Minimalism by looking at a number of different debates, places and time periods.

On the ground floor, three works surround a magnificent 1978 brushed aluminium “channel” piece by Donald Judd comprised of six open modular units, an early relief of Judd’s from 1961, a 1966 paintingbyAgnesMartinanda 1988plankbyJohnMcCracken.Thisensemblealreadyraisesseveral intriguing questions: given the compositional ideas Judd’s work shares with Agnes Martin’s, was he mistaken in so often dismissing painting? And how did John McCracken negotiate the relationship of painting and sculpture when he leaned his works between the wall and the floor? What role did colour play for Judd and McCracken, and how did they approach the difference between applied and integral colour? What differentiates these two artists’ handling of texture and reflectivity?
